Muscle mass is the predicted weight of muscle in the body and includes the skeletal muscles, smooth muscles such as cardiac and digestive muscles and the water contained within these muscles.

Muscles act as an engine in consuming energy. As muscle mass increases, the rate at which the body burns energy (calories) also increases. This naturally accelerates a person’s Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) – the daily minimum level of energy the body requires to function effectively – which helps to reduce excess body fat levels and results in healthy weight loss over time.

If exercise is recommended as part of an individual’s regime, muscle mass will increase and may increase total body weight. It is important to point this out to a client or patient so that the individual can see the true impact of training on their muscle mass.

Here you can find more information about muscle mass.

Segmental muscle mass

Certain TANITA BIA monitors provide muscle mass rating for five body segments: the core abdominal area and each arm and leg, providing further detail and an enhanced understanding of muscle mass changes in an individual.

A healthy level of muscle mass is critical to metabolic health and optimal physical functioning for everyone throughout their life. Segmental BIA provides a robust and non-invasive means of monitoring skeletal muscle mass.
